Attempted murder suspect arrested

MARQUETTE — A suspect was arrested early this morning for an attempted murder in Newberry, according to the Michigan State Police.

The suspect allegedly broke into a male subject’s home, firing several shots and striking the homeowner with the firearm. The victim, who was uninjured, was able to flee the home and reported the assault to the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie Post around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect, who is related to the victim, was located at his own residence in Newberry around 11 p.m. Thursday but refused to turn himself over to law enforcement, police said. Troopers and deputies from the Luce County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team, which arrived on scene and negotiated with the suspect for several hours. The suspect “eventually gave up” and was taken into custody around 2:20 this morning.

The incident remains under investigation as of this morning, police said.
