1 dead after Bois Blanc Island fire

MARQUETTE — One person has died as a result of injuries sustained in a fire at a cabin on Bois Blanc Island, according to the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office.

Kevin McCormack, 59 and Caroline Klautky-McCormack, 51, were injured in a fire that occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday on the island. Both had been flown to a burn unit in the Lower Peninsula. McCormack later died at a Lower Peninsula hospital, while Klautky-McCormack remains hospitalized and is expected to recover, police said.

Responders had been called to the scene after receiving a report of smoke on the island that was seen from Cheboygan, as well as a report from an individual who was walking on a road near the fire and was severely burned.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicated there was an accidental propane explosion in the home that caused “extensive fire and damage.”

Police said no other information is available and more information will be released when the investigation yields additional information.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshalls division assisted with the investigation. The state police, along with Mackinac County deputies and Bois Banc Township Fire department were on the scene Monday to conduct investigation of the scene.
