Police ID man who stabbed dog

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) — Police on Tuesday identified a man whom officers shot and killed after he stabbed a police dog in the head during a hostage situation.

Zane Blaisdell, 48, of Saginaw was shot by police inside his home Sunday morning, Michigan State Police Special 1st Lt. David Kaiser said.

Police previously said they went to Blaisdell’s home in response to a neighbor dispute that escalated into a hostage situation. Blaisdell’s partner was being held in the couple’s shared house against his will, Kaiser said.

Saginaw police officers and 5-year-old German shepherd Deebo entered the house and police said Blaisdell stabbed Deebo in the head with a knife he had been brandishing, Kaiser said. Two Saginaw police officers fired on Blaisdell, killing him. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Deebo is recovering.

“Deebo is doing well given his circumstances,” Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Gerow said Tuesday.
