MARQUETTE — After closing for a short time, Donckers Candies, 137 W. Washington St., Marquette, reopened recently and remains in the hands of the Donckers family. Fred Donckers bought the 95-year-old business from his twin brother, Frank, and reopened it in March. Donckers was started in 1896 as a confectionary store and in 1917 added ice cream and lunches, and continued until 1969, when the restaurant part of the store was closed. Candies and gifts were sold until the business closed in March. Now, there is a large selection of candy and homemade gifts on hand. The store’s grand re-opening was celebrated by owner Fred Donckers; manager Barb Murk; Marquette city mayor Bill Birch; and other community officials, Dan Smith, Bill Perry and Ellen Sargent.

ISHPEMING — Ernie Tom and his Yellow Jackets orchestra of Iron Mountain will furnish the music for the weekly dancing party to be held at the new Lakeview hall at Diorite. More than 200 couples attended the opening of the new hall last Friday, and it is expected that fully as large a crowd will be on hand tonight as the Yellow Jackets are a very popular dance band.
