MARQUETTE — Ruby, a 3-week-old raccoon, found some friends in Jamie Maslanka, 7, and Jennie Maslanka, 9, whose mother, Paula, rescued the abandoned kit from the backyard of a Marquette residence. Paula Maslanka is the animal control officer in Marquette and was called to aid the raccoon. The girls have been bottle feeding the young raccoon and getting it outside for walks until it’s old enough to live at the Presque Isle Zoo for the summer.

MARQUETTE — Beaches, parks and picnic areas were jammed again yesterday as the season’s first warm spell continued into its fourth day. Meteorologist Fred Mueller said it was expected to get into the 80s again today, although cloudy skies would hold down the mercury in some areas. Last Thursday the mercury soared to 85, the first time this month the temperature reached the 80s. On Friday it was 88, the highest reading of the season. Saturday’s high was 82 and yesterday’s 84. Along with the warm readings have been unusually large amounts of sunshine (94% of the daylight hours on both Saturday and yesterday), resulting in pleasant weather for most people but posing a watering problem for people concerned about lawns and gardens. Despite the record precipitation in the spring, there had been no measurable amount of rain in Marquette up to this morning since July 2, and only .0 of an inch has come down this month.
