Superiorland Yesterdays

MARQUETTE — Knights of Columbus Marquette Council 689 and Harvey Council 6447 honored their founder, the Rev. Michael J. McGivney, by holding a second and third degree initiation of 40 candidates at St. Michael Church May 12.

Fifteen members from the two local host councils were knighted during the ceremony: Jerry Doucette, Dan Pompo, Dan Archambeau, Jerry Vallar, Mike Hulbert and Don Hurrell, Marquette; and Frank Opolka, Del Mercier, Jeff Johnson, Gary Johnson, Bob Henning, Greg Johnson, Tim Connors, John Hammang and Bob Grimes, Harvey.

A mass at St. Michael and a banquet at the Northwoods Supper Club followed.

Other councils involved were Negaunee, Ishpeming, Gladstone, Escanaba, Munising and Manistique.

90 years ago

MARQUETTE — Athletes representing two Marquette schools will journey to Escanaba next week to take part in the third annual relay carnival to be held in that city on Saturday, May 31.

John D. Pierce will have Brigman entered in the high hurdles, one of the special races.

Coach Hurst also is attempting to select a group of youngsters to enter in the Class C medley relay.

At Marquette high school, trials are being conducted for the purpose of choosing an 880-yard relay team. Several boys are trying out and among the most favorable are Paris, Katz, Jackson, Hillberg, Ojanen and Pigott.

The feature attraction will be the performance of Tom Warne, Northwestern University, who is recognized as the greatest pole vaulter in the world at the present time.

This in itself will be a spectacle that should draw a huge crowd.
