MARQUETTE — When there is a problem with a washer, a stuck window, or an inoperative thermostat, residents of Northern Michigan University’s 280 family housing apartments know Tim Schmeltzer is the man to call. For keeping buildings in order and tenants happy, Schmeltzer has been named NMU’s Employee of the Quarter. Custodial Supervisor Tom Stanaway said Schmeltzer’s dependability is one of his strongest points. “Tim’s conscientious and shows real concern for maintaining the level of service we try to provide,” Stanaway said. Schmeltzer has worked for the Housing and Residence Life Department since starting NMU after graduating high school in 1979. Several times during the winter, tenants called the Housing and Residence Life office to express thanks after Schmeltzer dug their stuck vehicles out of the snow or jump-started them when they wouldn’t start. Schmeltzer, who lives on Craig St. with his wife, Colleen, will be presented with a certificate of recognition by NMU President James Appleberry. A native of Fort Hood, Texas, Schmeltzer moved often while his father served in the U.S. Army and spent some time living in West Germany. His late father, Richard, and his mother, Marilyn, are Marquette natives and returned to Marquette to retire.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Sheriff Rudolph Freeman was investigating a robbery occurring at the South Carpenter avenue garage of the Kingsford Motor Company. Thieves removed tools valued at about $125 and two hot water car heaters, but left little trace behind as to their identity. Entrance to the building was gained through a coal chute, the thieves lowering themselves to the basement floor with a rope. The two hot water heaters were taken from cars, the rubber tubing being cut.
