MARQUETTE –City residents are concerned that a sweet piece of history is ending, but Frank Donckers, owner of Donckers Candies downtown, says he can’t afford to be sentimental about the century-old family store. Economics are important to his decision, but Donckers, 68, said there are many other reasons too. “I’m tired,” he said. “I’ve got to get out of the business for economic and health reasons.” The $65,000 asking price is low for such a prime location, according to bank officer Bob Inch, who is a former Donckers patron. Donckers said the public wants the building to be restored to what it was in the 40’s and 50’s. “That takes too much money.” However, 10 of the original booths are still stored in the back. Donckers was originally a tobacco and confectionary store, opened 90 years ago by Fred Donckers, Frank’s grandfather. In 1914, it became a fountain shop and candy store. Many area residents have fond memories of sipping cherry Cokes at Donckers after school. A lot of people will miss the store.
