NEGAUNEE –A Jan. 20 date is being eyed for the opening of the city of Negaunee’s luge run in the Lucy Hill area in the southeastern city limits. It was originally hoped the run could open in early December, but early freezes in October pushed the date back to late December. Then a cold snap came in mid-December, pushing the opening back further. “When we get hit with cold weather like we had last month, it sets us back some days,” said City Manager John Korhonen. “Some days it was 20 below and no work could be done.” Korhonen said work remaining to be done on the project includes the thawing of a copper valve in the lower part of the run and the installation of pipes in the upper part of the run.

SOO JUNCTION — Public works department employees yesterday began picking up discarded Christmas trees, and the pickup will continue through the balance of the week. Edward Eck, foreman of the department, acting in the absence of V.E. (Ed) Swan, superintendent, who is on vacation, said a three-man crew is using one truck to make the Yule tree collections. “We’ll probably have to return later for a regular swing since many people still have their Christmas trees up,” Eck said, “but there also are many trees which have been discarded, and rather than have them blown about the neighborhood, we decided to collect as many as possible.” Eck said the trees should be placed at the curbing, but reminded homeowners that only Christmas trees would be collected. “We won’t collect any trash or other materials,” he said.
