MARQUETTE — Marquette City Manager David Svanda hopes the arrival of civic leaders for the Michigan Municipal League’s annual convention will demonstrate that Marquette is “on the cutting edge” of municipalities statewide.

Aside from the immediate economic impact of the 900 people expected to attend the three-day convention, Svanda said it gives the city a chance to show off.

One of several tours planned for the convention is a look at the new county landfill in Sands Township with Marquette Mayor Robert Berube.

Other tours will showcase Sawyer Air Force Base, Marquette General Hospital, and the Tilden and Empire mines.

City architecture and the fall colors of Sugar Loaf Mountain will also be featured. Spencer Nebel, Marquette’s assistant city manager, said about 740 people have registered for the convention so far.

City employees, Sharon Guidebeck, Marsha Genore, and Diane LaPorte, prepared welcome packets for area hotel rooms that will house persons attending the convention Thursday through Saturday.

MARQUETTE — A disgruntled former employee of WLUC-TV has admitted to sabotaging telecast operations to prevent the station from carrying the World Series games.

The former employee signed a confession in which he said he inserted a metal object in the microwave relay tower at Lathrop in northwestern Delta County “for spite.” Engineers were flown to Marquette from Chicago and Green Bay to assist WLUC-TV technicians find the source of the difficulty.

Large pieces of equipment were taken apart and examined inch by inch before it was discovered that a metal object had been installed to “jam” or “scramble” the signal.

Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Anthony F. Spratto and Marquette County Sheriff Thomas Jernstad had been conducting an investigation of the case since last Friday.
