HOUGHTON — It will take more than the Mackinac Bridge to bring the Upper Peninsula business needed for a generally improved economy, an advertising executive said yesterday. Greg Manchester, advertising director for Cross Co. of Detroit, told a business management forum at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology that “although tourism has become a multi-million dollar business in the Upper Peninsula, only the surface of this gold mine has been scratched. With the mines running out, the Upper Peninsula must look to its future. Tourism offers the most significant opportunity for immediate return, but a unified program of all out sales promotion, advertising and public relations is needed to meet the terrific competition of other vacation areas.”
