MARQUETTE — The Marquette Police Department was among 27 law enforcement agencies honored during the recent Leadership Awards Luncheon of the Michigan Coalition for Safety Belt Use.

Marquette was recognized for its series of programs designed to increase public awareness of the importance of safety belt use, said Connie A. Soma, coalition executive director.

Marquette’s programs included enforcement of safety belt laws which included issuing tickets for violations, educational programs in area schools, morning traffic reports to local news, media, and posting of “Buckle Up” signs throughout the city. This is the third year Marquette police have received the award.

Leadership awards were presented this month to 11 other local police departments, six county sheriff’s departments and nine state police posts.
