MARQUETTE — A few of Marquette architect Barry Polzin’s ideas about designing homes along Lake Superior are included in the May edition of Lake Superior Magazine. An article titled, “Lake Superior Home Styles” encapsulates the thoughts of several homeowners, developers and designers from around the big lake on how they take advantage of the environment, how they use windows, decks, and accessibility to the waterfront in their designs.

“Weather definitely shapes the design,” Polzin is quoted in the article. “Houses used to be built cheaply, were not well insulated, were expensive to heat and had ice problems. Building costs are higher today, but operating and maintenance costs are lower. There’s a lot of stained western white cedar on exteriors, requiring little maintenance.”

MARQUETTE — Two Marquette boys, 12 and 15 years old, were lost for nearly 24 hours in the woods west of the city Saturday and, after spending the night in a brush shack which they built, found their way to the D.S.S.& A. railway tracks near Morgan Heights about 8 o’clock yesterday morning and walked home. They left here about 10 o’clock Saturday morning for a hike in the woods and several hours later they became lost, walking in the opposite direction to which they thought was the way home. When night came, the boys, equipped with a hatchet and hunting knife, constructed a lean-to in which they spent the night. Their parents, becoming alarmed when they failed to return home, contacted the American Legion, the Boy Scouts, and the state police. A search party abandoned their efforts about 2 a.m. yesterday morning to await daylight. The boys returned home before the search party started out a second time.
