MARQUETTE — The work of 25 Detroit area artists will be exhibited in the “1968 Motor City Review” at Lee Hall Gallery at Northern Michigan University Saturday through Oct. 5. The exhibition will show a wide variety of work from some of metropolitan Detroit’s best contemporary artists, according to Wayne Francis, gallery director at NMU. “There will be some shocking imagery and raw art,” Francis said. “An exhibit like this hasn’t been seen before in the Upper Peninsula.” The Michigan Gallery in Detroit is assembling the show, and will send a busload of people, including the 25 artists, to Marquette for the opening reception. Following the opening, Detroit performance artist Russ Taylor will perform “Satori Circus,” a one man “musical orchestration” of “wild and crazy dance, song, mime, light, and energy” at Ten O’Clock Charlie’s on Third Street in Marquette.

ISHPEMING — No more will Johnny dunk Mary’s pigtails in the inkwell. At least not in Ishpeming Public schools. Nor will school staff employees mix up batches of ink in the high school basement. The school system is now using ballpoint-type pens, replacing the old pen holders and ink. The new pens, shaped and weighed like the old holders, are designed and recommended by a penmanship equipment manufacturer.
