ISHPEMING–Nearly 300 grade school students from Marquette County’s west end are having fun learning this week. They’re taking part in the Gifted and Talented Summer Enrichment Program offered by the Ishpeming, Negaunee, NICE and Republic-Michigamme school districts. The program is intended to help students in the first through eighth grades who have been identified as gifted in one of several academic areas to learn a little extra and have fun doing it. Most of the program’s classes are designed to offer more and different opportunities than are available during the regular school year. A unique class offered for the first time this summer is being taught at the Michigan Iron Mining Museum near Negaunee. Students in grades five through eight are investigating topics such as local mining history and archaeology.
