GWINN – Area firefighters responded to a wildfire near Sawyer Air Force Base early Thursday afternoon and quickly contained what could have been a disastrous blaze. A little less than eight acres of forest land was scorched when fire broke out near Martin and Sporley lakes near the base. The cause of the fire was not yet known this morning, according to state Department of Natural Resources spokesman John Schneider. More than 40 firefighters from the DNR and four local fire departments responded to the scene quickly. Tim O’Brien, a Department of Natural Resources firefighter, worked on a burned over section of jack pine near Martin Lake, along with Pete Puska. “We’re being real fortunate in getting these fires quickly, and that’s what kept this fire to a relatively small size,” said jim Haapapiro, assistant area manager of resource protection in the DNR’s Gwinn office.
