According to a report from the Negaunee Police Department, one car and two pickup trucks were taken from the lot at Dan’s Used Cars at 207 Silver St. sometime early Tuesday morning. MICHIGAMME – The first of 30 moose expected to be released in northwestern Marquette County was due to arrive at its release site this morning, according to a Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman.
The moose a pregnant, 975-pound cow was to arrive today after an all-night drive from Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park, where it was captured after being shot with a tranquilizer dart fired from a helicopter.
The four- to five-year-old moose is “doing just fine” and should be in prime condition when released into the sprawling wilds north of Michigamme, the spokeswoman said.
The state plans to ship in 30 moose over two years, in exchange for 150 wild turkeys wanted by Ontario. Michigan will get up to 10 bull moose among the 30 as it tries to re-introduce the species.

A fund drive has been launched in an effort to help keep the building heated, but organizers say it is still far short of the $10,000 goal. The Mather Inn has been named to the State Register of Historic Sites as well as the national Register of Historic Places.

MARQUETTE – The 20 or so members of the Scottish Country Dancers of Marquette have been active since forming last September under the guidance of instructor and founder Dorothy Kahler. She became interested in Scottish country dancing while at college out east about 10 years ago and that interest was rekindled this past year.
She said the activity provides good aerobic and mental exercise. It requires the ability to think of patterns. It is similar to square dancing, but there is no caller and groups of four usually set in a “Y” rather than a square.
Kahler said she hopes the group will one day become a member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, which has affiliates in both Scotland and the U.S.

SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE – U.S. Sen. Carl Levin released a letter Tuesday that he says shows the Air Force is planning to move additional bombers and tankers to Sawyer Air Force Base. B-52 bombers and KC-135 tanker planes are being moved from four other Air Force bases to make room for the new B-1B bomber that will be deployed in coming years.
Personnel that would accompany the reassigned aircraft would partially offset the loss of more than 600 military and civilian jobs beginning in October, when the 87th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron is scheduled to be disbanded.
In his letter Gen. Clifford H. Rees Jr., the Air Force’s director of legislative liaison, reiterated that “K.I. Sawyer and Wurtsmith Air Force bases, together with their surrounding communities, are vital portions of our strategic force structure.”

MARQUETTE – “I can remember my grandfather talking about local scoundrels no-account drunks. And my father would say ‘He’s a good man in the woods.'”
That gave Michael Loukinen the inspiration for his third film, “Good Man in the Woods.” The Northern Michigan University sociology professor said this film studies “the inner strength and dignity” of the U.P. residents. The film will portray a variety of ethnic cultures and will highlight the scenic beauty of the U.P. in all four seasons. Loukinen will also study the various dialects of the region and “dialect joking traditions,” through which the area’s “extreme multi-ethnic community has coped with the ethnic differences.” Many preliminary interviews are conducted, with the most promising candidates selected for filming. “Good Man in the Woods” is “almost 25 percent done,” Loukinen explained.
