NEGAUNEE — Two city policemen were injured when their patrol car was rear-ended after a 100-mph chase on U.S. Highway 41 Friday east from Negaunee to Marquette. The Marquette Police car was struck from behind by a Marquette County Sheriff’s Department car as the chase ended in a pile-up, with the suspect’s car landing in a ditch along the by-pass just east of McClellan Avenue. At one point, the suspect, a 42-year-old man driving a white Ford Escort station wagon, crossed over into west-bound traffic. He was being pursued by five city police, state police, and sheriff’s cars. State Trooper Brett Gooding initiated the chase at the Teal Lake Avenue and U.S. 41 intersection in Negaunee. “He didn’t have his headlights on and when I tried to make a traffic stop, he tried to outrun me,” Gooding said. By the time the cars reached Marquette Township, police were able to apprehend the driver without incident, said State Trooper Glen Hartley. “They just opened the door and took him from his car,” Hartley said. The suspect, whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, was being held at Marquette General Hospital for observation.

CHAMPION — The new Champion Post Office will be dedicated this Saturday during a ceremony scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. The post office is a new brick building erected at a new location. A large parking lot adjoins the building. Alden Derrie, postmaster, is in charge of all arrangements for the program, which will include a talk by Clyde H. Layton, representative of the U.S. Post Office Department. Leonard Beck will be master of ceremonies. The Champion Lions Club, which is sponsoring the dedication, has invited Dr. Paul Van Riper to be its honored guest, since he not only is the oldest Lion in the club and one of the oldest residents of the area, but also in Champion’s most distinguished citizens. An “open house” will be held at the new postal facility at 2:30, Derrie announced. The post office, located on U.S. 41, is part of the Post Office’s unique commercial leasing plan where investment financing is used to obtain needed facilities, which remain under private ownership, pay local taxes, and are leased to the federal government.
