IRON MOUNTAIN -- The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center has received additional funding for facility improvements during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, including exterior building repairs at Buildings 1 and 2.

The funding is part of a record $4.8 billion in nationwide Department of Veterans Affairs spending through the Veterans Health Administration's Non-recurring Maintenance program to modernize, repair and improve health care facilities during fiscal year 2026. The Iron Mountain medical center received funding earlier in the fiscal year as well, allowing it to continue addressing facility maintenance needs and improving its infrastructure.

"This funding allows the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center to continue renovating and improving, so our facility remains safe, efficient and equipped to provide high-quality care for veterans in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin," said Dr. John P. Shealey, medical center director.

The VA obligated the entire $4.8 billion available through the program for fiscal year 2026. The funding supports a range of maintenance and modernization projects at VA medical facilities nationwide.

Among the projects approved during the fourth quarter, $1.183 billion was allocated to repairing and upgrading outdated infrastructure systems in medical facilities. Another $938 million was designated for major building upgrades, including elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants.

An additional $560 million was allocated for facility infrastructure maintenance and modernization to support future updates to the VA's electronic health record system.
