By Journal staff 2 min read

HOUGHTON -- UP Health System-Portage will host a free breast health presentation Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Houghton, offering community members an opportunity to learn about breast health, screening recommendations and advances in breast care from local health care providers.

The event will take place at Bonfire at The Continental Fire Co., 408 E. Montezuma Ave. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with presentations beginning at 6 p.m. A complimentary dinner will be provided.

The educational program will feature presentations from UP Health System - Portage providers and specialists on topics including breast health, mammogram recommendations, Magseed® technology, genetic testing and patient navigation services.

Scheduled presenters are Charles Goodwin, MD, PhD; Paul A. Lyle, MD; Wade Liston, DO; and Madeleine Crowe, RN.

The presentation is part of the health system's ongoing efforts to improve access to health education and encourage women to take an active role in their health throughout the year.

"Breast health is important every month of the year, not just during Breast Cancer Awareness Month," said Angela Luskin, community health coordinator at UP Health System-Portage. "This event gives community members the opportunity to hear directly from local experts, ask questions and learn about the latest screening recommendations and resources available right here in our community."

Luskin said the goal is to empower people with knowledge so they can make informed decisions about their health.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women. Routine screenings and early detection can play an important role in improving outcomes, and the presentation will highlight advances in breast care and support services available to patients throughout their health care journey.

"At UP Health System-Portage, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools in health care," said Ryan Heinonen, chief executive officer of UP Health System-Portage. "By bringing together our providers and community members in an informal setting, we can help increase awareness, answer questions and encourage preventive care."

Heinonen said the health system is proud to offer residents an opportunity to connect with trusted local experts and learn about available resources.

Community members are encouraged to register in advance at UPHealthSystem.com/Events or call 906-483-1187 for more information.
