MARQUETTE – United Way of Marquette County invites the community to participate in its annual Walmart Food Drive from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Walmart in Marquette Township, according to information provided by United Way.
The event kicks off the TV6 Canathon while connecting eight local nonprofit organizations with much-needed food, household essentials and monetary donations.
"Food insecurity doesn’t happen just one day a week, and neither does the struggle to afford groceries, prescriptions or utilities," Andrew Rickauer, executive director of United Way of Marquette County, said in a written statement. "For many families, these are everyday decisions. That’s why we need to think beyond individual food drives and work together to connect people with the resources they need throughout the year."
Unlike traditional canned-food drives, this event accepts fresh and perishable foods, including produce, meat, dairy and frozen items. Participating nonprofits will collect donations during their shifts, allowing some food to be put to use in local programs and meals that same day.
Food insecurity remains a significant challenge in Marquette County, where an estimated 22% of residents experience food insecurity and 43% of households fall below the ALICE threshold, meaning they struggle to afford basic necessities.
This year’s message, "Give What’s Needed. Make a Real Difference," encourages thoughtful giving. Donors are asked to consider what families actually need and would want to eat, rather than simply donating unwanted items from the back of their cupboards.
"We’re grateful for every donation, but we also want to encourage people to give with intention," Rickauer added. "Fresh, nutritious food and everyday essentials can make an immediate difference. People experiencing food insecurity deserve the same quality, dignity and choices we want for our own families."
Shoppers can purchase requested items inside Walmart and drop them off with participating organizations outside the store. Requested donations include fresh produce, meat, dairy products, canned foods, pasta, peanut butter, paper products and personal hygiene items. Monetary donations are also welcome.
