ESCANABA -- The Upper Peninsula Trappers Association is hosting a Trapper Education Class 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Great Lakes Sports Club, 5211 19th Ave. North, Escanaba.

Prior to this in-person field day, students must complete an online trapping course and be prepared to pass a 50-question state test at this event. There is no charge for the online course but there is a $10 charge for the field day to cover the cost of the light meal that will be provided and the "pail of goodies" that will be given to students - worth way more than the $10 fee.

The class is open to anyone with an interest in learning to trap. The class prepares students to be safe, ethical, and successful as they begin their lifelong trapping experience. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and some very young students may struggle with the required exam.

Students from age 9 to 65 have successfully completed this course here in the U.P. and many have become successful trappers. Mothers, fathers, and guardians have taken the class with their children so they can better help them out on the trapline.

Safety and ethics are the primary focus but things like finding locations, making sure animals are there, using lures and baits, setting traps, preparing furs for market, various "trap sets" commonly used and many other tips, tricks and methods will be covered.

A Trapper Education Certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the class.

If you are interested in taking this class, please email Bob Steinmetz at bobsteinmetz@charter.net so he can email you the necessary links for registering for the class and for taking the online course. Bob can also be reached at 906-786-6265 if you have any questions.
