MARQUETTE -- In conjunction with the celebration of America's independence, the Marquette Regional History Center is focusing on the Native American treaties in our region.

Hosting a 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 program at the center will be Jason Schlender, the executive administrator at the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission. Join organizers for Schlender's talk, A Timeline of Anishinaabe Treaty Rights in the Northern Great Lakes.

GLIFWC was formed in 1984 to assist its 11 member bands in the implementation and protection of their off-reservation treaty rights. One of the most formidable

obstacles to achieving these goals has been public misunderstanding of treaties, treaty rights and tribal sovereignty. Recognized will be the four major regional treaties, how they function and how they are part of our American story.

There is a $5 suggested donation.
