DETOUR -- A 24-year-old DeTour village man was arrested last Thursday after Michigan State Police responded to a report of a break-in at DeTour Area Public Schools early Thursday morning.
The incident led school officials to cancel classes for the day, although classes resumed Friday.
According to the Michigan State Police post in Sault Ste. Marie, troopers were called to the school at approximately 6:30 a.m. Oct. 1 after school staff arrived early to prepare for the school day and discovered a person inside the building. Staff members called 911.
Troopers arrived at the school, located the suspect and took him into custody. Police said no weapons were found on the man.
Investigators determined that property inside the school had been damaged, including computers and that some areas of the building had been left in disarray.
School officials initially delayed the start of classes while the building was cleaned and the damage assessed. Classes were ultimately canceled for Thursday.
The suspect was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail on charges of breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property. The investigation remains ongoing.
