RR track maintenance, culvert work to impact traffic flow

By Bud Sargent 2 min read

ISHPEMING -- A pair of projects is expected to impact traffic flow in their respective locations in the coming days.

In Marquette County, the Mineral Range Railroad will be closing Marquette County Road PE (the entrance to the Tilden Mine) at its intersection with Marquette County Road 476, as well as Marquette County Road PAN at its intersection with Marquette County Road PE, beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12.

The Mineral Range Railroad is a shortline railroad operating in the Upper Peninsula. Headquartered in Ishpeming, it operates about 17 miles of track in Marquette County, hauling nickel and copper ore concentrates from the Eagle Mine’s Humboldt Mill.

The closures are expected to remain in effect through Friday, Oct. 16, while track maintenance operations are conducted. Motorists traveling to the Tilden Mine must use an alternate route during this closure.

Separately, in Chippewa County, the Michigan Department of Transportation will spend about $300,000 to replace a culvert on M-80 with construction scheduled to begin Friday, Oct. 16.

The culvert has reached the end of its useful service life, according to MDOT. Replacing it is intended to help maintain safe and reliable travel along the highway.

The project will require M-80 to close between South Gaines Highway and M-129 beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 16. Traffic will be detoured along M-129 and M-28 to I-75.

The closure is expected to remain in place through Monday, Oct. 19. After the detour is lifted, motorists should expect intermittent lane closures as crews complete paving and other remaining work.

MDOT officials note that M-129 is now open following completion of a separate culvert replacement project at Fletcher Creek.

The M-80 work is expected to be completed by Oct. 19, although the exact schedule may be affected by weather and other construction conditions.
