MARQUETTE -- As the 100th anniversary of one of the Upper Peninsula's deadliest mining disasters approaches, Northern Michigan University Archives will host a public presentation examining the history of the Barnes-Hecker Mine and the people connected to it.
The Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives will present the next installment of its "Evening at the Archives" series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Room 228 of Harden Hall at NMU.
Zach Lanciani will discuss his research process and share findings from his investigation into the Barnes-Hecker Mine, located near Ishpeming, where 51 miners died in a disaster in November 1926.
The presentation will also examine Philo P. Chase, the landowner who leased his property to Cleveland-Cliffs for the mine, offering additional historical context about the site and its development.
The event is scheduled just days before the 100th anniversary of the disaster, providing an opportunity for community members to revisit a significant chapter in the region's mining history.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
