MARQUETTE -- Family caregivers of people living with dementia will have an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the challenges associated with the condition through a free simulation program on Friday, Nov. 13, in Marquette.
Dementia Live®, an immersive educational experience, will be offered at Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice, 914 W. Baraga Ave. Several small-group sessions will be held throughout the day, with group sizes limited.
The program is designed to help nonprofessional family caregivers better understand what it may feel like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory changes. Participants use specialized equipment that simulates dementia-related changes in eyesight, hearing and tactile sensation.
Through this firsthand experience, participants gain insight into the anxiety, confusion and other challenges that people living with dementia may encounter in everyday life.
The experience also aims to build empathy and provide caregivers with practical tools to improve communication and strengthen connections with loved ones living with dementia.
Dementia Live is offered by the Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
There is no charge to participate, but advance registration is required. Those interested may reserve a spot by calling 906-280-8734 or 906-217-3009.
Registration will close when individual sessions reach capacity or on Nov. 6, whichever comes first.
