GLADSTONE -- The Michigan Department of Transportation is working with Wisconsin Central Ltd. railroad to remove a spur crossing on US 2/US 41/M-35 in Gladstone, providing a smoother road surface with the tracks removed. Warning devices will no longer stop traffic, improving traffic flow.
Work began Monday and includes removing the railroad crossing, pavement markings, track signals and all related railroad crossing warning devices. The crossing will be replaced with asphalt.
Work is expected to be completed by Thursday, Oct. 1. The cantilevers and traffic signals will be removed later. Drivers should expect one lane open in each direction.
In a separate MDOT matter, the agency is hosting two virtual webinars to discuss and collect input on the state long-range transportation plan, known as Michigan Mobility 2050 (MM2050).

MM2050 defines the long-term direction for the future of Michigan’s transportation network for all users. The plan incorporates an overall vision of the state’s transportation system, while also including federally required documents:
• SLRTP
• State Rail Plan
• State Freight Plan
MM2050 also developed Michigan's active transportation plan. These four efforts combined into one document provide a streamlined multimodal vision of the future of transportation in Michigan across all modes.
MDOT updated the plan by reviewing the current Michigan Mobility 2045 plan (MM2045), reassessing its assumptions and making necessary adjustments to meet evolving federal requirements. As part of that effort, the planning horizon is extended to 2050 to maintain a 20‑year outlook. The new MM2050 plan builds on the goals and strategies of MM2045 while incorporating updates that reflect changes in Michigan's transportation system over the past five years.
The public comment period for the draft MM2050 documents will remain open until Friday, Sept. 25, 2026. The final plan will be presented for approval to the State Transportation Commission on Nov. 5.
