MARQUETTE -- UP Health System-Marquette has earned a three-year renewal of its mammography accreditation from the American College of Radiology following a recent review of the hospital's breast imaging services.

The ACR accreditation recognizes facilities that meet standards for image quality, patient safety, staff qualifications, equipment, quality control and quality assurance. The ACR's gold seal of accreditation is awarded after a peer-review evaluation conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who specialize in breast imaging.

"Accreditations such as this are very important to our hospital, and it's essential that our patients can access high-quality care close to home," said Tonya Darner, market chief executive officer of UP Health System-Marquette. "Renewing our ACR accreditation is evidence of our staff's continued commitment to the health of this community and furthers our mission of making communities healthier."

UPHS-Marquette offers digital breast tomosynthesis, commonly known as 3D mammography, for both breast cancer screening and diagnostic imaging.

The technology captures multiple images of breast tissue from different angles, allowing radiologists to examine the breast in thin slices. According to the health system, 3D mammography can improve cancer detection and reduce the need for additional imaging, particularly among women with dense breast tissue.

Mammography is used to help detect breast cancer at an early stage, including before symptoms develop. Early detection can allow breast cancer to be treated before it progresses.

The hospital said its renewed accreditation reflects its continued focus on breast imaging quality and patient safety and provides patients in the Upper Peninsula with access to accredited mammography services close to home.
