BARAGA COUNTY - A Michigan Technological University forestry professor is attempting to increase the songbird population in the Upper Peninsula and save large stands of jack pine from destruction by insects. Dr. Norman Sloan has spent the summer living in the bush on the Baraga Plains in an effort to reduce an infestation of jack pine budworm. Damage to trees in this area is already heavy, and if not controlled, may lead to total destruction of valuable forests. Sloan is working on the theory that an increase in bird population will reduce the insect count. Since the area is not attractive to birds, he is trying to attract more by installing bird boxes for nesting and adding to the available summer water supply.

MARQUETTE - Putting his charges through a last-minute signal practice on Longyear field last night and a "skull session" later at the high school, Gordon Seger, assistant coach, declared the Marquette High School football eleven was as prepared as it could be for the invasion today of the Sault Ste. Marie gridders. The game, which opens the 1936 season in Marquette, will start at 2:30 o'clock on the Northern State Teachers college field. The Graveraets have been putting in two hours of practice on fundamentals and scrimmage every night this week, following two weeks of pre-school warming up. All points of the game have been stressed, and after giving all candidates chances for each post, the following first string lineup has been announced: R.E.–Kitzman, R.T.--Hager, R.G.--Filpula, C.--Allan, L.G.--LaBlue, L.T.--McCombie, L.E.--Eastley, Q.B.--Bureau, L.H.--Hetherington, R.H.--W.
