HOUGHTON -- One man was pronounced dead after the vehicle he was driving smashed into a pair of private residences in Calumet Township Sunday afternoon.
According to Lt. Ben Eckola, Michigan State Police Eighth District public information officer, officers at the agency’s Calumet post responded to the crash site at approximately 3:53 p.m. Sunday.
The preliminary investigation indicates a pickup driven by a 50-year-old man from Calumet, was traveling eastbound on School Street near Hecla Street when the driver experienced a medical emergency. The type of emergency was not described.
The vehicle left the road and struck a residence's attached garage on the north side of School Street. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse, traveled across School Street and struck another residence's attached garage on the south side of the road.
Upon arrival, a trooper and a first responder took the driver out of the vehicle and attempted medical treatment, including CPR. The driver was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw in Calumet where he was pronounced deceased.
The death of the driver, who was not identified, is suspected to be from the medial emergency, rather than from injuries sustained in the crash. Nobody in either of the residences or anyone else was injured, Eckola said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
