NEGAUNEE -- Motorists traveling US 41/M-28 near the M-35 intersection east of Negaunee should expect lane closures beginning this week as contractors for the Michigan Department of Transportation begin work on M-35.
The traffic restrictions are expected to remain in place until late October.
Under the temporary traffic plan, one eastbound lane of US 41 will be closed near the M-35 intersection. The westbound US-41 direct turn onto southbound M-35 also will be closed.
Drivers who want to turn south onto M-35 from westbound US 41 will instead be directed to the next crossover to the west.
On M-35, traffic will be reduced to one alternating lane controlled by flaggers.
The restrictions are part of a $6.2 million MDOT project to rebuild more than three miles of M-35 in Marquette County between Marquette County Road 480 and US 41.
The project includes rebuilding the existing roadway, adding new asphalt pavement and widening paved shoulders. Crews also will realign the M-35/Marquette County Road 492 intersection and convert it to a modern roundabout.
Additional work includes grading and tree clearing at various locations along the route to improve roadway safety.
MDOT is advising motorists to use caution when traveling through the work zone, follow posted signs and be prepared for delays while construction is underway.
The M-35 improvements are scheduled to continue through the fall, with the current US 41 and M-35 lane restrictions expected to remain in place until late October.
