Here are some recent additions to Peter White Public Library's Library of Things:
Have a musical itch, but are a complete newbie? Try out the steel tongue drum (LIBTHING DRUM)! The drum is made with beginners in mind and can be played with hands and fingers or the included mallets. Everything is labeled and the included song book is easy to follow along with. It's the kind of instrument that really sounds good, no matter what is being played. We've heard of patrons borrowing the drum to play in yoga classes, sound baths, and meditation sessions. One of our most popular Library of Things items, the telescope, recently got an upgrade (LIBTHING TELESCOPE CAROLINE)! Introducing Caroline, a portable, beginner friendly telescope. It is intuitive to aim for wide-field night sky viewing or use the handy built-in laser finder to search for specific constellations, planets, and stars. Also included is a pocket guide to constellations, a head lamp, and links to tutorials on how to use it. This telescope is named for German astronomer Caroline Herschel. The other telescope available for check out is named Isaac, for Isaac Newton.
Coming soon to the Library of Things: a sewing machine! In partnership with the Marquette Sustainability Coalition (the group who runs Repair Café), a Singer sewing machine will be available soon. In conjunction with the release of the sewing machine, Repair Café volunteers are creating video tutorials on how to set up the machine and complete basic repairs. Or, come to a future Repair Café at the library, where volunteers will guide you through using the machine so you can complete your own repairs!
We are in the midst of food preservation season, and the Library of Things can help prepare you for winter with a food dehydrator (LIBTHING DEHYDRATOR). The machine has six stainless steel racks for dehydrating anything from herbs to fruits. A PWPL staff member even shared stories of their son using the dehydrator to prepare rations for a four-month long hiking trip, including beans! The machine also comes with a recipe booklet to help get you started.
Items from the Library of Things can be checked out by adult aged library card holders. Items can be checked out for two weeks at a time and renewed once. The Library of Things is made possible by the PWPL Friends of the Library.
