By Journal staff 2 min read

MARQUETTE -- UP Health System - Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program has welcomed Dr. Marin Olson as its new behavioral medicine educator, continuing a legacy of education, wellness and patient-centered care established by her father, Dr. Ralph Olson, who served in the role for more than a decade.

"Dr. Ralph Olson has been an integral part of our team over the years, helping train and support our residents in so many important areas--including interviewing skills, communication, mental health care, and physician wellness," said program director, Dr. Suzanne Clarke. "I'm incredibly grateful for his partnership and the foundation he has helped build. We're excited to welcome Marin Olson to our team and look forward to the fresh energy, perspective, and enthusiasm she will bring to our residents and our program."

Dr. Marin Olson brings her own expertise and perspective to the residency program while building on the values of compassion, service and lifelong learning that she witnessed throughout her father’s career.

Behavioral medicine educators serve a critical role in family medicine training, helping bridge the gap between psychology and primary care. Their work includes teaching effective communication strategies, applying the biopsychosocial model of care, developing curriculum, and supporting physician wellness initiatives.

Dr. Marin Olson earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Mississippi State University and a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She is also a proud Northern Michigan University alumna, graduating cum laude in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in in psychology and a pre-clinical concentration.

“My dad’s contribution to the residents’ education and well-being, along with his relationships with the program’s staff and faculty has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me across my training and career," said Dr. Olson. "I am fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the fruits of my father’s labor and, in a small way, return the kindness Marquette has shown me while growing up here. I hope to expand upon my father’s work with the residency program in creating education and wellness support opportunities for residents that both complement and highlight Marquette’s culture of community connection and fun.”
