MARQUETTE -- An in-depth discussion of Northern Michigan University's common learning program which will go into effect this fall highlights programming this week on the university's educational television network, WNMR-TV. Dr. Vito Perrone, dean of the common learning program and associate professor of history, will be interviewed on "Northern Dimensions," which will be telecast at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The common learning program is linked with the four-course plan which Northern will introduce this fall. Common learning includes 10 courses--eight required and two elective. The required courses will be in the humanities, the natural sciences, mathematics, and the social sciences. The choice of electives will include a foreign language and a senior seminar, depending upon the individual student's needs and plans. Other highlights this week: "international Magazine" at 9 tonight, features a look at the resent Protestant Holiday celebration of Orange Day on July 12 in Northern Ireland, the high cost of cigarette smoking in Italy, which has brought on a smuggling enterprise with Switzerland, and how modern British upper-class society perpetuates itself by bringing in wealthy citizenry.

ESCANABA -- Good weather, record crowds of visitors, and many new exhibits, shown and special features label the eight annual Upper Peninsula State Fair as one of the best in the organization's history. Saturday will be Farmers' day, and the annual cow-calling, husband-calling, hog-calling, and rolling pin throwing contests will be held. Contestants in the vocal events will be judged on volume of tone, variety in calling, charm or appeal to the hog, husband, or cow, originality, musical quality, and facial expression. Any married woman in the wide world is eligible for the husband calling contest, and no entrance fees are required in any contest. A target representing a husband will be set up for aspiring housewives.
