HARVEY -- Silver Creek Church will host its annual Backpack SOS community outreach from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Silver Creek Church in Harvey.
This year marks the 20th year Silver Creek Church has provided backpacks and school supplies to local children. The drive-through event is open to children Pre-K through 12 grade. Children do not need to be present and no pre-registration is required for this drive-through event.
Each child will receive a backpack, age-appropriate school supplies, a pair of socks, a hygiene kit and a voucher for three free outfits from Silver Creek Thrift. Families will also receive a variety of food, beverages, and household items generously provided by Convoy of Hope, while supplies last.
Teen girls will receive a special gift, made possible through the generous support of the Zonta Club of Marquette.
Silver Creek Church is grateful for the many partners who help make this outreach possible, including Convoy of Hope, Delta Dental Foundation, Harbor Rotary, Midway Rentals, Silver Creek Thrift, Tadych's, and the Walmart Foundation.
What began 20 years ago as an effort to provide backpacks and school supplies to local children continues today as Backpack SOS, a community outreach designed to help families prepare for a new school year with dignity and care.
In other developments, Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a Mobile Food Pantry. Distribution will take place at Silver Creek Church, 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey, on Thursday, Aug. 13.
Food distribution will begin at 10 a.m. and continue while supplies last or until 11:30 a.m. Food will be available for approximately 600 families. This will be a drive-through event with directions given by parking lot attendants.
Guests are asked to remain in their cars and have adequate space prepared in their trunk or back seat in advance to allow the distribution team to place food boxes directly in the vehicle.
