MSHS 60th reunion observed

ISHPEMING -- A six man crew under the supervision of Ed Farley, public works superintendent, has begun a street rebuilding project on W. Empire St. Sidewalks which are to be replaced and large trees which were in the street right-of-way were removed prior to the start of installation of new sidewalks and curving and street paving. In all, about 700 feet of sidewalks and curbs are to be constructed and about 3,500 feet of street will be paved. Not only is this project the biggest one involving expenditure of municipal capital outlay funds here this year, but it also included the largest sidewalk installation job undertaken in Ishpeming in several years. The city pays for the street paving portion; property owners will be assessed for the sidewalk and curb installation. W. Empire is part of the drive around Lake Bancroft and also is used to handle much of the traffic for athletic events and recreational activities at the Ishpeming playgrounds.

ISHPEMING -- Members of the Wawonowin Golf Club are busy swinging their clubs in practice for the club championships in the women's and men's division to be held within the next two weeks. The championship for the men will be played September 5, 6 and 7. No definite date has been set for the women's tournament, but it is expected that play will start next Tuesday afternoon. Announcement will be made this weekend. The 1935 champions were Mrs. J. D. Crane, with Mrs. M. Burke runner-up, and Leo Vingie, with L. Stensaas as runner-up. Stensaas was club champion in 1934. On September 19 and 20, a county open championship tournament will be held at the club. Entries will be received from golfers throughout the county. Medal play will be the rule. The president's trophy, second and third flights, are drawing to a close. The first flight was won by Donald Tripp, son of Claude Tripp. In the second flight, Donald Tripp is matched with L. Stensaas in the semi-finals. The third flight has reached the second bracket and will be completed before the close of the season. The Wawonowin Golf Club has had a successful season with a number of new and young players joining the club. The course is in fine condition in spite of the hot weather and dry spells. The Fair-ways are rough and dry, but the new greens, built in recent years, are the best ever.
