MARQUETTE -- A local resident has been named to the Michigan Arts and Culture Council 2026-2027 Rising Leaders cohort, a group of 16 early- to mid-career professionals shaping the future of arts and culture across Michigan.
Athena Stanley, executive director of Kaufman Auditorium at the Marquette Area Public Schools, received the honor recently. Stanley is the Upper Peninsula’s lone representative on the state list.
“What makes Rising Leaders especially exciting to me is the opportunity for sustained, interactive learning. MACC and Partners in Performance have created something much deeper than a one-time professional development experience, giving us multiple opportunities over several months to learn together, apply what we are learning, and continue growing as leaders,” she said. “I am humbled by the caliber of the individuals in this cohort. They are doing remarkable work in arts and culture throughout Michigan, and this is an incredible opportunity to learn from one another, build relationships, and become better acquainted with the creative work happening across our state.”
Stanley said she is excited to serve as an” ambassador for Marquette and the Upper Peninsula. I hope to bring what I learn, the relationships I build, and new ideas back to our community through my work at Kaufman Auditorium. Partnerships are so important in the arts, and I am excited about where those connections might lead.”
Over a six-month period, participants engage in a series of activities that include three intensives focusing on self-awareness and self-management; mutual influence; and gaining tools to create communities and a state where everyone can experience and express creativity in their daily lives.
"The 2026-2027 Rising Leaders cohort reflects the depth of talent and passion found across Michigan's creative communities," said Alison Watson, director of the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. "We are thrilled to support these 16 individuals as they develop their leadership skills, collaborate across sectors, and help shape the future of arts and culture in our state."
Launched in 2018, the Rising Leaders program has fostered collaboration and professional growth for over 88 individuals working in museums, theaters, cultural organizations, community centers and creative businesses throughout Michigan.
Program participants from across the state of Michigan gain tools and perspective needed to strengthen their leadership skills and develop relationships with an extraordinary cohort of peers dedicated to advancing the arts and culture field.
