HARVEY -- Construction on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail's 4.3-mile Lakenenland Extension remains on schedule for completion in mid-September.
According to IOHT Administrator Bob Hendrickson, the project is improving the existing multi-use trail corridor from Kawbawgam Road to Lakenenland Sculpture Park, including upgrades to the railbed and installation of a new crushed aggregate surface matching the existing trail in Chocolay Township. The extension will remain open to both motorized and non-motorized users.
Hendrickson said surface improvements will continue through August, with construction of the ADA-accessible parking pad at the Lakenenland trailhead scheduled for the first week of September. Final vegetation work and site remediation are expected to be completed the week of Sept. 14.
The project will also include a bicycle rack and interpretive panels highlighting the area's natural features and cultural history.
Construction remains active. For the safety of trail users and construction crews, the public is asked to respect all posted construction zones, follow any temporary closures or detours, and use caution when traveling near active work areas.
