SAULT STE. MARIE -- Sault Ste. Marie police released a statement detailing the conclusion of a search operation in the Cloverland Power Canal after a deceased man was found.
"The Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Departments have concluded the search operation for an individual who entered the Cloverland Electric Power Canal from the Ashmun Street Bridge on July 24," said their statement. "The individual, an adult male, was located today within the canal near the Cloverland Electric power plant and was found deceased. Out of respect for the family, the individual's name is not being released.
"The incident began on July 24 when emergency responders were dispatched after reports that an individual had entered the water from the Ashmun Street Bridge spanning the power canal. Over the following days, an extensive search operation was conducted utilizing specialized personnel and equipment from numerous local, state and federal agencies."
Sault Ste. Marie Police utilized two unmanned aircraft systems (drones), a remotely operated underwater vehicle, an underwater live-view camera system, two canine teams and side-scan sonar.
"Our deepest condolences are with the individual's family, loved ones and all those affected by this tragic loss," said the SSMP.
"The Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Departments extend their sincere appreciation to Cloverland Electric Cooperative, Kokosing Industrial, Chippewa County Central Dispatch, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Border Patrol, the Michigan State Police Marine Services Division, the Michigan State Police Canine Unit, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and all personnel who dedicated their time, expertise and equipment throughout this operation.
"The professionalism, cooperation and commitment demonstrated by all agencies involved were instrumental in bringing this search to its conclusion."
