"An Expanse of Blue" by Kauakanilehua Māhoe Adams (TNFIC ADAMS). Aouli is lost, fighting her sister, losing her best friend and unheard at home. The one place she feels like herself is Aunty Ehu's house, spent with her extended Native Hawaiian Family. One day a secret about her family shatters her world, making the world constrict even more; until she meets Nalu. With his help she begins to see herself more than what everyone says she is and finds her voice.
"Calling Me Home" by Laurin Becker Macios (TNFIC MACIOS). Jenny is 17, recently graduated high school and has spent her childhood planning a future she can control. Before heading off to NYU she embarks on a solo backpacking trip through Europe. As she travels, her best laid plans begin to unravel, she works at a bookstore in Greece, takes overnight train trips and even falls in love. Upon her return to the states she learns she is pregnant and must choose a path forward with the support of her friends and family.
"The Story of My Anger" by Jasminne Mendez (TNFIC MENDEZ). Yulieta Lopez is angry, at her drama teacher, the school board and that she needs to keep quiet until she graduates and leave Texas forever. Accustomed to being the good daughter and student, Yuli's rage builds until she can no longer be silent. Yuli and her friends start a guerilla theatre club, which stirs things up and gets people talking. This allows Yuli the ability to step into the role she was always meant to play. This book is a 2026 Pura Belpre Honor Book.
"Sync" by Ellen Hopkins (TNFIC HOPKINS). Twins Lake and Storm have always been in sync, they survived their mother's rejection and the past 5 years of foster homes, both together and part. This time they are separated, Storm is worried about his sister but is out of juvie and finally in a good home. Lake, also found some happiness with fellow foster Parker, but Parker and Lake run away and now trying to survive. Lake and Storm are now out of sync and wonder how each is doing. This novel in verse is told in dual perspective through unsent letters about siblings fighting their way back to each other.
