MARQUETTE - The lack of substantial rain during the latter part of June and to date during July has greatly increased the forest fire hazard across the Upper Peninsula, according to the Marquette regional office of the Michigan Department of Conservation. Fire officer, Donald Claus, Big Bay, reported that only 3.17 inches of rain have fallen in the area since records were first taken last April. Normally, more than 13 inches of rain fell during that time. Regional conservation officials in Marquette reported that a total of 293 fires have burned 2,010.9 acres of land in the Upper Peninsula so far this year.
