MARQUETTE - Two Amendments attached to "renaissance zone" legislation signed into law Wednesday may increase the chances for tax-relief zone in the Upper Peninsula. The legislation signed by Gov. John Engler calls for a maximum of six urban and four rural zones for up to 15 years. The zones eliminate most state and local taxes, except the state sales tax and local bonds.

MARQUETTE - Marquette county crops, as a whole, although not a total loss, will bring the smallest return in many years as a result of the prolonged drought and accompanying intense heat wave, L. R. Walker, county agriculture agent, predicted yesterday after a survey of farms in the county. The only crop that has withstood the twin disasters-the drought and heat-comparatively well is potatoes he said.
