NEGAUNEE -- Jacob Schmeltzer, Negaunee Public Schools band director, will guest conduct this week's Negaunee City Band concert, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.
Schmeltzer has chosen to open and close the concert with marches: Sousa's "New York Hippodrome March" celebrates a famous old theater, while "Amparito Roca," a Spanish march, is one of the most well-loved and played marches by concert bands. Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band" is a perfect way to open any concert. It will be followed by "A Leroy Anderson Portrait," originally scheduled for last week's concert (canceled because of inclement weather conditions). This medley includes "Serenata," "The Syncopated Clock," "Blue Tango," and "Bugler's Holiday." Another medley is "Highlights from Wicked," with numbers such as "No One Mourns the Wicked," "Defying Gravity," "No Good Deed," and "For Good."
"Italian Festival," arranged by Munising's Glenn Osser, has songs with themes of love and summertime. "Kalos Eidos" is an unusual composition meant to musically portray the characteristics of a kaleidoscope. "American Barndance" is an energetic and lively work that contains elements of an early American character. "Live and Let Die" is one of the most powerful and dynamic themes of all the James Bond movies.
The final number will be the band's Dixieland-style rendition of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
