Negaunee City Band to play Pioneer Week concert

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Band concert will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, for this week only in order to avoid conflict with other scheduled events. Concerts are held at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. A special feature of the concert is a trumpet solo, “Gabriel’s Oboe,” by Randy Veale, retired high school band director.

Director Lucas Wickstrom has chosen to open the concert with “Third Suite,” a number with three movements, opening with a march, followed by a waltz, and finishing with a rondo. “Emblem of Unity,” the concert’s only march, is a classic and exciting composition played by hundreds of school and professional bands each year.

There are several medleys on the program. “The Best of Journey,” a vital part of the music scene in the early 80’s, includes “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Open Arms,” and “Any Way You Want It.” “Highlights from The Wizard of Oz” are “If I Only Had a Brain,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead,” and “Over the Rainbow.”

“Irish Tune from County Derry” is Percy Grainger’s setting of the tune often referred to as “Danny Boy.” “A Scottish Sunrise” is based on the Celtic hymn, “Morning Has Broken.”

Several upbeat numbers conclude the concert. “Pinball Wizard” is taken from The Who’s rock opera album, “Tommy,” while “A Galop to End All Galops” emphasizes a fast tempo and has impressive-sounding passages for almost every instrument.

The final number, as always, is the band’s Dixieland version of “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
