NEGAUNEE -- For the final concert of the summer, the Negaunee City Band will reprise the most popular numbers played during the season, as selected by the audience and the band. The concert is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.
Everyone likes medleys, from Broadway shows, movies, and popular groups such as Journey. Leading the way is "The Best of Journey," a vital part of the music scene in the 1980s, with songs such as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Open Arms," and "Any Way You Want It."
Broadway is represented with "The Magic of Andrew Lloyd Weber," featuring "Superstar," "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," "Memory," and "The Phantom of the Opera." "Selections from Mamma Mia" include "I Have a Dream," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," "The Winner Takes It All," and "Dancing Queen."
"Highlights from Wicked" are "No One Mourns the Wicked," "Defying Gravity," "No Good Deed," and "For Good." The medley from "Pirates of the Caribbean" brings all the swashbuckling excitement of the high seas, with outstanding percussion parts.
Other numbers reflecting popular culture are "Pinball Wizard" from The Who's rock opera album, "Tommy," and Paul McCartney's music for "Live and Let Die," one of the most powerful and dynamic themes of all the James Bond movies.
What band concert is complete without a march? Everyone's favorite is the National March of the U.S.A., "The Stars and Stripes Forever." The concert, and the 2026 summer season, will conclude with "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
