Negaunee City Band Concert features tuba solo
This week's Negaunee City Band concert, to be held on Wednesday (July 29) at 7:30 at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street, will feature Chris Adams on tuba playing "Solo Pomposo." Adams is a recent NMU grad who plays both tuba and percussion with a
number of local groups.
Other numbers that were originally scheduled for the concert several weeks ago that was cancelled because of poor air quality are by Leroy Anderson. "The Typewriter" has been used often over the years for radio broadcast theme music, especially for news programs. "Sleigh Ride" is one of Anderson's most famous pieces, while "Home Stretch" is a spirited piece that captures the essence of a thrilling race to the finish.
"Selections from Mamma Mia" will surely please concert-goers, with familiar numbers such as "I Have a Dream," "Knowing Me, Knowing You," The Winner Takes It All," and "Dancing Queen." Another well-known number that has gone from minstrel song in the 1840s to children's song today is "The Blue Tail Fly," with lyrics about "Jimmy Crack Corn."
A more exotic number is "Variations on a Korean Folksong," a set of variations on a song the composer, John Barnes Chance, heard while with the U.S. Army in South Korea in the late 1950s. Also on the program is "Make Our Garden Grow" by Leonard Bernstein, from his operetta "Candide"
based on the 18th century novella by Voltaire.
As usual, the concert's final number will be "Just a Closer Walk with Thee."
