MARQUETTE — From 1 to 4 p.m. on July 19, the Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse will be hosting an event in celebration of Lake Superior Day. The event is free and family-friendly and provides an opportunity to learn about the history, conservation, ecology and regional importance of Lake Superior.

The event will feature a variety of outdoor informational and activity booths, including from Superior Watershed Partnership, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the UP Children’s Museum, who will have specific children’s water and arts/crafts activities.

Lake Superior began in Thunder Bay, Ontario in the early 1990s, and has since spread to communities around the lake. Barker’s Island in Wisconsin celebrates with live music, boat tours, paddleboarding and family learning booths, and Copper Harbor has a festival organized by community volunteers and Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center, featuring special activities and a community picnic. The Marquette Maritime Museum has been celebrating the day since 2019.

“I saw an advertisement for another community celebrating LSD in 2019 and wondered why Marquette, a historic port city on Lake Superior, did not celebrate it,” said Hilary Billman, director of the Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse. “I decided to organize our free community event through the Maritime Museum that year to celebrate the region’s largest Great Lake and promote ecological conservation.

“I appreciate that, because of our location, the museum is able to host LSD on the shores of Lake Superior. Our mission statement is to protect, preserve and interpret the maritime history of Marquette, Lake Superior and all the great lakes, and this celebration supports that mission. Lake Superior Day has become an annual celebration for us.”
