Here are some recommendations from the Youth Services Staff at Peter White Public Library.
Ms. Holli's Read: The Underdogs of Upson Downs by Craig Silvey (JFIC SIL). A sweet and funny story about a girl and her dog. The Shearer’s family farm is having a hard time; they need to pay the overdraft on the overdraft! Annie and Runt enter a prestigious dog show to win enough money to save the farm… BUT Runt will only obey Annie’s commands if nobody else is watching. The two share a very special bond, and you will cheer on these two till the very end of the book.
Ms. Marissa's Read: Flowers for Mama by Deborah Freedman (JFIC FRE) . The cutest little kitten book you ever did see! Oleander wants to find something beautiful to give to Mama. While all the other kittens create something using their artistic talents, Oleander works hard to grow a beautiful flower. But will it grow in time for Mama's special day? Miss Claire's Read: Dancing Hands by Joanna Que and Charina Marquez (JFIC QUE). A young girl observes her new neighbors dancing with their hands. She wonders; what does it mean? What are they saying to each other? As she becomes friends with the neighbor girl, she learns how to dance with her hands, too. This is a sweet, heartwarming story about friendship, with an interesting afterword about Filipino sign language and some tutorials to signs a few words yourself.
Mr. Frank's Read: This Is Orange: A Field Trip through Color by Rachel Poliquin (535 PO). The color always existed, but, in English and other European languages, "orange" did not have a name until the fruit made its way from India and China. That's just one bit of info-ala-orange (and there is some on ducks as well) in this beautiful book that explores orange's history, existence, and usage throughout the world.
Ms. Grace's Read: Just One Gift by Linda Sue Park (JFIC PAR). Told through a mix of dialogue and journal entries in a school language arts class, each student brainstorming gifts to give in their communities. Each student is given a category; family, friend, or "?" (a person that can be neither family nor friend) and asked to think of a person that they could give a gift, one that they have never asked for. Through class discussion and assigned journal entries, we learn about each student and who they chose. A glimpse into the big and little things that we can all do, to think about others and how we can positively affect each other’s lives without needing to be asked.
Miss Sarah's Read: "Please Pay Attention" by Jamie Sumner (JFIC SUM). Warning - this book will make you cry. This chapter book, written in verse, is broken up into 2 main parts, Before and After. Before is Bea's day to to day life, her recounting of her adoption, her day at school, her Little (little kindergarten buddy), her CP - just the life of a 6th grader. Then there is the shooting at her school, followed by the After. After is guilt about freezing, grief for her lost teacher, fear of closed spaces and not being able to escape. After is beginning to recover, trying equine therapy. After is opening her backpack again. After is discovering what she can do. Highly recommended read, but be warned, this one will hit you with all the feels.
