Negaunee City Band to play Wednesday

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Band continues its summer series of free weekly concerts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. The opening number will be “Celebration Fanfare,” originally written for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and then transcribed for band under a commission from the U.S. Coast Guard Band.

The program continues with “Be Still, My Soul,” a hymn setting of Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia” melody. Another number with devout origins is “Blessed Are They,” the prelude of Brahms’ “German Requiem.” Contrasting with these selections is “Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron,” an intense, vigorous work inspired by a Biblical event.

“Appalachian Dreams” is based on two English folk songs popular during the Revolutionary War era, “Going to Boston” and “Soldier, Won’t You Marry Me.” “Down by the Riverside,” also known as “Ain’t Gonna Study War No More,” is a Negro spiritual song. “Big Brass Band from Brazil” is a tune originally written for the 1947 Broadway musical, “Angel in the Wings.”

The program’s only march is “Corcoran Cadets” by John Philip Sousa. The Corcoran Cadets was the most notable of the drill teams which flourished in Washington, D.C., after the Civil War. Their average age was 16, and they presented a snappy picture with their colorful uniforms, wooden rifles, and youthful enthusiasm.

The program will conclude with the audience favorite, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Starting at $4.00/week.
